Our Theme for 2018: Positive Male Role Models
Annually, the Family Resource Centre (FRC) celebrates International Men’s Day throughout the month of November with several interactive events highlighting each year's international theme.
Last year's observance kicked off locally on Sunday, 5 November 2017 with the Celebrate Men and Boys Church Service at 10 a.m., Savannah United Church. The service focused on the importance of male role models for children and families and also encouraged men and boys to appreciate the value of positive behaviours to their health, and to that of communities.
An International Men’s Day Roundtable was hosted by Rooster 101, at 7.30 a.m. on Friday, 17 November. The forum brought together men and boys to discuss male health issues, highlight male achievements at home, in their families/partnerships, while looking at obstacles men sometimes face.
To highlight the significance of men and boys enhancing bonding with relatives during leisure time, the FRC’s final event to mark the observance is International Men’s Day Family Day on Saturday, 18 November. The event was held at Kings Sports Centre, 3.30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
This Year's theme Positive Male Role Models highlights the important role of positive male role models in men for boys. Research shows that involvement of a father or a positive male role model has profound effects on children. Father-child interaction promotes a child’s physical well-being, perceptual ability and competency for relating with others. Furthermore, these children demonstrate greater ability to take initiative and evidence self-control.
Stay tuned to learn how the FRC will be celebrating International Men's day this year!
